Galileo

I've been reading about Galileo a bit today. The one issue of his life that I honed in on was how he discovered that the earth rotates around the sun rather than the other way around, and for this, he got in trouble with the church, who taught the former.

He discovered something true that conflicted with what was thought to be true. Bible texts that say that the sun rises and sets were taken literally to mean that the sun was moving across the sky. Today we know that the earth moves, while it appears that the sun moves. It doesn't make the text wrong of course.
