What good would it do to get everything you want and lose you, the real you?

For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?

Luke 9:25

This saying Of Jesus is found in the context of his telling people what it would take from them, to be a follower of his: Deny yourself, take up your cross. Then he says that if you try to save your life, you will lose it, but if you lose your life for him, you will find it saved. Then he expound on that with the statement that you may well be able to gain the whole world, but what good will it be ultimately, if in so doing, you lose? Then, as if that person was now listening having turned from their path to self glory, he says that you might be tempted to feel ashamed of his words, but don't do it.
