Can Churches be too small?

I served as a pastor/elder of a house church for 3 years, and for most of that time the church met in my home. I’m very familiar with the joys and blessings of a simple church meeting in the home, and I understand quite well the reasons why Christians leave “traditional” churches for this kind of intimate, family-like setting. So I understand and sympathize with the thinking behind the house church movement. (I’ve had many conversations about the church’s “edifice complex,” etc.) But is a modern-day house church or a “micro-church” the most faithful way to live out the pattern of the church we find in the New Testament?

After signing the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776, founding father John Adams said the following to his wife, Abigail:

         I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations
as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty; it ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore. 

I thought about Adams’ words as I watched the recent July 4th festivities in Washington, D.C. President Trump’s “Salute to America” was the most well-done July 4th celebration I can recall. Non-political in every way, including POTUS’ speech, the celebration simply recounted portions of our history and honored our service men and women. I’m sure Adams looked down with strong approval and deep appreciation.
