Psalm 42 is for and about a believer who is seriously depressed.
Deep calls unto deep is a call to walk with God, in our pain.
Weeping, crying, and wailing are prayer languages.
Have you wept lately?
Weeping releases something deep, perhaps because when we weep, we are honest and vulnerable, humble.
Tears are cleansing.
You could say that prayers or worship without tears are not real or authentic.
The word translated here as 'waterfalls' is actually צִ× ּוֹרֶיךָ tzinoreeka which means 'cataracts' : a descent of water over a steep surface; a waterfall, especially one of considerable size; any furious rush or downpour of water; deluge.
In the depth of depression, we call to the depths of God.
His waterfalls, His breakers and billows, His waves go over us.
Deep sorrow and loss, mixed with hope.
This is Christ in the Psalms and the fellowship of his sufferings.
I am not being punished, but promoted.

It is the cry of a man far removed from the outward ordinances and worship of God, sighing for the long-loved house of his God; and at the same time it is the voice of a spiritual believer, under depressions, longing for the renewal
