False teachers and commercial profit

And in their greed they will exploit you with false words; their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.
-2 Peter 2:3

False teachers exploit the church.  'Exploit' in English is defined as:

"To exploit in a negative sense means to use someone or something unfairly for your own advantage, often taking advantage of their vulnerabilities or weaknesses. This can involve manipulating or controlling others for personal gain."  (Webster's and Cambridge dictionaries)

Most popular translations have the word exploit here, but the King James has "make merchandise of".  Exploit does not tell the full story that the Greek word ἐμπορεύσονται (emporeusontai) tells, which is literally "make money out of".

The New Living Translation translates the verse this way: "In their greed they will make up clever lies to get hold of your money. But God condemned them long ago, and their destruction will not be delayed."

False teachers make up phony stories, which are intended not to help you, but to fleece you.

"In the context of false teachers, greed indicates a self-serving motive that contrasts with the selflessness expected of true spiritual leaders (1 Peter 5:2-3). The love of money is described as a root of all kinds of evil (1 Timothy 6:10), and here it drives the false teachers to exploit others."  (Biblehub)
