Communion Mediation: He Was Betrayed As He Gave Us The Lord's Supper

We have these familiar words from the Apostle Paul in First Corinthians chapter 11, verse 23:

"For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread;"

Paul frames the instructions for taking the Lord’s supper with the phrase, “In the night in which he was betrayed.”

Why did he do that?

The Lord Jesus instituted the remembering of His death at the same time as Judas was about to hand Jesus over to the people who hated him.


Judas was commissioned as an Apostle.
Judas participated in the ministry of Jesus.
Yet, Acts 1:25 tells us that “Judas by transgression fell.”

While Judas was preparing to betray Him:

Jesus washed Judas's feet.
Jesus shared the meal with Judas.
And Jesus gave Judas the opportunity to repent.
Yet, Judas chose betrayal.

Judas shows us that any of us can let our hearts drift away from Christ.

The betrayal of Jesus illustrates for us how playing with sin is radio active.

The Lord Jesus, in the night in which he was delivered up, instituted the Lord’s Supper.
